The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/whr\/2001\/media_centre\/press_release\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that <\/span><b>1 in 4 people will suffer from mental health at one point in their lives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To help raise awareness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the World Health Organisation recognises <\/span><b>World Mental Health Day<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on October 10th every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poor mental health can affect every aspect of your life, including relationships, work and your physical health, and can be impacted by internal and external factors. Recent studies have highlighted COVID-19 as a significant external factor impacting people\u2019s mental well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a study by mental health charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/media-a\/5929\/the-mental-health-emergency_a4_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>60% of adults and 68% of young people under 25 have reported that their mental health has worsened during the lockdown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk\/news\/least-half-million-more-people-uk-may-experience-mental-ill-health-result-covid-19-says-first-forecast-centre-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre for Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believes that approximately <\/span><b>half a million more people will experience a mental health problem over the next two years<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as a result of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"commonmentalhealthdisorders\"><strong>Common mental health disorders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does evidence suggest that COVID-19 has caused mental health issues in sex workers, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)31033-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also reveal that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">existing mental health problems are likely to be exacerbated\u201d by issues related to the pandemic, such as anxiety over income and housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to further <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1003297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common mental health disorders currently experienced by FSWs (female sex workers) are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression (usually the most common)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While studies on the mental health of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivastreet.co.uk\/blog\/male-sex-workers-an-insight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and transgender sex workers are limited, information and resources on this subject can be found <\/span><a 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autonomy at work\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe working conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivastreet.co.uk\/blog\/sex-work-myths-debunked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigmas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with sex work have also been strongly associated with mental health illnesses in sex workers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.le.ac.uk\/departments\/criminology\/people\/teela-sanders\/BriefingPaperSexWorkandMentalHealth.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted by the University of Leicester found that social stigma has averted many sex workers from accessing vital care and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tipsonhowtoimproveyourmentalhealth\"><strong>Tips on how to improve your mental health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are struggling with your mental health, it is advised that you seek the support of a professional who will help you identify the reasons behind it and the best way to treat it. However, there are some things that you can do yourself to help improve your mental well-being. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Regular exercises:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Incorporating frequent exercise can not only help you with your physical health but is also a good way to produce <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endorphins<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and liberate toxins from your body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Meditation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Meditation is a great technique that can help you to keep present, aware and calm under pressure.
